Our History...
Baileytown Christian Church was organized in 1934 by Dr. R.L. Peters who was also the co-founder of the Winston-Salem Bible College. The church began with only 6 members that included, Mrs. Ruth Brown, Mrs. Maude Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Welch and Mr. and Mrs. Hassell Bailey. The congregation originally met under a tent in Walnut Cove. During the winter months, worship services were held in Bro. Richard Bailey's home, while in the summer they were held under a big oak tree located on the Bailey property.
Dr. Peters appointed Rev. C.M. Robinson as the first pastor of Baileytown Christian Church in 1934. A year later, Baileytown would build its first church building. Soon after, the first choir was organized and a deacon board was installed. Rev. Robinson was pastor at Baileytown for 27 years.
In 1963, Rev. Nathaniel King Sr. became the second pastor of Baileytown Christian Church. Rev. King earned his doctorate degree, yet preferred to be called, Mr. Nat or simply Rev. King. Under Rev. King's leadership, the church grew spiritually and numerically, especially with young people. As a result of the church's growth, two more choirs were formed, the young adult and youth choirs. The church would undergo various renovations, but would eventually become too small to accommodate its members. Rev. King served as pastor for 24 years until his transition to glory in 1987.
Baileytown's third pastor, Rev. Nelson McCall, would be installed in April of 1988. As pastor, Rev. McCall installed new deacons and ordained current associate pastor, Rev. Lethaniel Davis. As the congregation continued to grow, the need for a larger church became a goal for the church family. With this, the building fund increased allowing the vision of Rev. McCall of having a new church to become a reality. On October 22, 1995, the groundbreaking for the new sanctuary was held with the original 6 members in attendance. Finally, after nearly two years, the congregation along with many relatives and friends marched from the old brick sanctuary over to the current sanctuary on April 27, 1997. With the hard work of its members and the blessing of God, Baileytown was able to pay its final mortgage payment in November of 1999. After 17 years of service as pastor, Rev. McCall transitioned in April of 2005 with Rev. Davis becoming the interim pastor for almost a year.
On the fourth Sunday of May 2006 as Baileytown celebrated its 72nd Church Anniversary, the deacon board announced that a new pastor has been selected. Rev. Michael W. King became Baileytown Christian Church's fourth pastor. Rev. King is the son of our late pastor, Rev. Nathaniel King Sr. Before returning to Baileytown, Rev. King was pastor at Center Christian Church in Greensboro, NC and Payne's Chapel Baptist Church in Mt. Airy, NC. Under Rev. Michael King's current leadership, the church has been able to prosper in many ways, from membership and spirituality to auxiliaries and community outreach. Rev. King believes in fellowship and having the church body be on one accord.
After more than 77 years of existence, Baileytown Christian Church continues to be a forward thinking church with an even higher vision in sight. The doors of Baileytown always swing on welcome hinges and God is the main attraction.
